How does acupuncture work for fertility?
There are as many theories as there are acupuncture points (hundreds). PFC Acupuncturists rely upon (and often participate in) the extensive research done in this field. The research which has been done is not perfect but some studies suggest that acupuncture improves ovulation rates, increases blood flow to the uterus (which improves chances of implantation) and results in overall better pregnancy outcomes. More research still needs to be done to verify if acupuncture truly does improve fertility, and if so, by how much? However, we do not believe that acupuncture is harmful for patients attempting to conceive.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Pain tolerance is of course subjective, but most people who shudder at the thought of needles are pleasantly surprised at the lack of pain. While at some sensitive or trigger points there can be initial discomfort, the incredible relaxation benefits quickly take over. Even the most squeamish patients often leave their session feeling restored, revived and even a bit blissed out.
Is acupuncture safe?
Acupuncture is absolutely safe when performed by trained, skilled practitioners. Just don’t try it at home.
How long does it take?
We wish we could give an exact date, but what we can give patients are more specifics based on your individual history and presentation. In general, we work with people for a minimum of 3-6 months. (It takes 3 months to develop new eggs).
How often does one need to come?
Treatment plans are as varied as our patients. Part of our initial consultation will be to create a treatment plan that is specific to each patient’s needs. In general, we see people twice a week so that we can closely monitor their cycle and progress. And as acupuncture works cumulatively, we believe in building a strong foundation, then moderating as need from there.
Should one continue treatment once pregnant?
Patients can continue to get acupuncture throughout their entire pregnancy if they wish. We usually recommend that once patients are pregnant, they continue to come once a week through their first trimester to support the pregnancy and help with any of the common symptoms associated with early pregnancy. We’ve found great success using acupuncture for treating the insomnia and nausea that often comes in the first trimester. Many of our patients also use acupuncture as a baby-safe way to treat any non-pregnancy related health concerns.
What should one do before and after treatments?
Be sure to eat before coming in. Other than that, dress comfortably and plan to try to take it easy after a treatment. One of the great side-benefits of acupuncture is relaxation – we believe in making that last as long as possible.
